Redefining "Doing Your Best"

Embracing Grace in Our Efforts

"Doing your best" can often feel like a vague and loaded phrase, leaving many of us feeling as if we should be capable of more—more effort, more results, more perfection. I’ve personally wrestled with this notion, pushing myself to exceed my own expectations to the point of burnout and emotional exhaustion. It’s a familiar story: I’d pour everything I had into a task, only to find that my best still fell short of what I envisioned.

In our relentless pursuit of success, we sometimes forget a crucial truth: even our best efforts can’t always meet the lofty standards we set for ourselves. And that’s okay.

The Weight of Expectations

The pressure to constantly "do your best" can be overwhelming. It creates an invisible standard that can lead to feelings of inadequacy when we inevitably struggle to meet it. I’ve often found myself caught in this cycle, believing that if I wasn’t achieving perfection, I was somehow failing. But here’s the revelation I’ve come to embrace: it’s not about always hitting the mark; it’s about the intention and effort behind what we do.

Allowing for Imperfection

Every person deserves their own grace when it comes to not meeting expectations. Just because something didn’t turn out as planned doesn’t diminish the effort that went into it. We must learn to recognize that falling short of our ideal outcome is still valid. It doesn’t erase the hard work, dedication, or passion we poured into it.

What if we shifted our focus from perfection to progress? Instead of berating ourselves for not achieving an arbitrary goal, we can celebrate the journey and the lessons learned along the way. Sometimes, it’s in our perceived failures that we discover the most about ourselves.

The Importance of Self-Compassion

Self-compassion is key in this journey. It’s about treating ourselves with the same kindness and understanding that we would offer a friend. When we allow ourselves to feel disappointment without spiraling into self-criticism, we create space for healing and growth.

  • Embrace Your Efforts: Understand that your efforts, regardless of the outcome, are deserving of respect. Acknowledge the hard work you put in, even if the results didn’t align with your expectations.
  • Try Again: If you’re not satisfied with how things turned out, give yourself permission to try again. Every attempt is an opportunity for growth, and every setback can lead to greater understanding and resilience.

Finding Balance

It’s vital to find balance in our pursuits. Constantly striving to do more than our best can lead to emotional drain and burnout. We need to remind ourselves that it’s okay to take a step back and breathe.

  • Set Realistic Goals: Break down your objectives into smaller, achievable tasks. Celebrate each small victory instead of fixating solely on the end result.
  • Practice Mindfulness: Stay present in your efforts. Mindfulness can help ground you, allowing you to appreciate your journey without getting lost in future expectations.

Embracing Your Best Self

In redefining what it means to do your best, we liberate ourselves from the shackles of perfectionism. It’s not just about the end result; it’s about the intention behind our actions and the growth we experience along the way. We all deserve grace for not meeting our own standards, and we can always choose to try again.

So, the next time you hear the phrase "do your best," remember that your best is not a destination but a journey—a beautiful, imperfect journey that is uniquely yours. Embrace it, learn from it, and allow yourself the grace to grow.

The man you stayed for himself
By Nicholas Urbaniak June 14, 2025
There are days when nothing makes sense. You try. You show up. You give your heart, your time, your attention. And still — nothing sticks. Nothing moves. Nothing reflects back what you hoped. Instead of momentum, you get static. Instead of appreciation, silence. You pour into things, into people, into ideas… and somehow feel more empty than full. And slowly, something inside you starts to break. It’s not dramatic. It’s quiet. A quiet cracking of belief. Belief that the world will reward your effort. Belief that kindness comes back around. Belief that if you keep doing the right thing, something will click. But sometimes, it doesn’t. And you’re left there — not with a revelation, but with a weight. A tiredness that no nap or quote or breathwork can fix. And here’s the truth: You’ve been giving everything away hoping someone would give something back. But now, there’s nothing left to give. And no one’s giving back. So maybe it’s time to stop. Not forever. Not dramatically. Just… for you. Stop waiting. Stop bleeding for things that don’t hold you in return. Stop trying to earn peace from a world that profits off your unrest. This isn’t giving up. This is self-rescue. You don’t need to be more useful, more available, more inspiring. You just need to be yours again. And that starts with something simple, but life-altering: “I see you. I won’t leave you again.” Because maybe the person you’ve been waiting to show up for you — was always going to be you. The one who stays. The one who protects your peace. The one who finally chooses you, without apology.
